Under Fire, Under Care: Wounded Soldiers Airlifted to Rambam
April 16, 2026 – Since the start of Operation Roaring Lion, Rambam Health Care Campus has been on the front line of medical response. To date, the hospital has treated 90 IDF soldiers wounded in Lebanon, along with 320 injured civilians.
Recently, the helipad at Rambam once again received wounded soldiers from the fighting in Lebanon. Ten IDF soldiers were injured in an encounter with three Hezbollah operatives in Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon, including three in serious condition. Some were evacuated to Rambam, while others were transported to additional hospitals in Northern Israel. Eight of the ten soldiers were evacuated to Rambam, which, since the beginning of Operation “Roaring Lion,” has treated 90 wounded combat soldiers, alongside hundreds of civilians injured at missile impact sites from rockets launched from Iran and Lebanon at Northern Israel.
Soldiers hospitalized in serious condition will require not only the continuation of complex surgeries but also prolonged rehabilitation. Rambam Deputy Director, Dr. Avi Weissman, who also serves as Head of Medical Operations and a senior anesthesiologist, said:
“Almost every day we have two helicopter landings arriving from the fighting zone in Lebanon. We work here around the clock with various IDF units to ensure rapid and efficient intake. It truly reminds me of the days of the First and Second Lebanon Wars—helicopters are constantly evacuating wounded soldiers to us.
“Many of the wounded we are treating suffer from limb injuries. The soldiers have excellent protection in the intense fighting in Lebanon, so they arrive mainly with limb injuries alongside additional wounds. We are doing everything possible to help them as quickly as we can, of course with the support of our incredible medical teams.”
Gila Hyams, Director of Nursing and Director of The Teaching Center for Trauma, Emergency and Mass Casualty Situations (MCS), says “There are many soldiers here from different combat zones, some arriving in very serious condition. This is a great concern for everyone—complex surgeries, teams assigned to them from the moment they land. There is fast assistance from IDF Medical Corps personnel together with Rambam to ensure rapid treatment and support for the families who remain close to the wounded.”
At this stage, the Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital has transferred some of the wounded soldiers to various internal medicine departments, which have returned to its aboveground wards at Rambam. Many patients remain hospitalized in the underground facility.
