The East Campus
Where Rambam Began
The eclectic collection of buildings on Rambam’s East Campus spans three centuries: an Ottoman-era former convent, a classic Bauhaus hospital, and the main Sammy Ofer Hospital, built in the 1970s. Systematic efforts are underway to upgrade and fortify these older facilities, so that every patient visiting Rambam Health Care Campus receives excellent care with comfort and dignity.

That is how Rambam’s first hospital building was hailed at its dedication in 1938.
A Campus with a Story
The oldest building on the campus, the Stone House, predates the hospital itself. Its cornerstone was laid in 1888 for a small Catholic convent, and it served as an Ottoman military hospital before returning to the nuns. Today it houses hospital offices and services. Beside it stands the 225-bed hospital the British Mandatory government dedicated in 1938, designed by the celebrated Bauhaus architect Erich Mendelsohn on the shore of Haifa Bay. And above them rises the main Sammy Ofer Hospital, the 1970s tower where much of Rambam’s inpatient care still happens today.
These buildings carry Rambam’s history. Keeping them worthy of its patients is the East Campus mission.
Upgrading, Fortifying, Renewing
We hope you will consider helping Rambam achieve its goal of offering modern treatment options in a secure and comfortable setting throughout its campus. Below are a few of the many important opportunities available:
Upgrading and Building New, Desperately Needed Facilities:
- Upgrading the Department of Internal Medicine, where many of Northern Israel’s elderly are treated
- Building a new Medical Intensive Care Unit in the Department of Internal Medicine
- Expanding and upgrading the Department of Neurosurgery – the main referral service for all of Northern Israel.
Acquisition of State of the Art Imaging Equipment:
- A Spect CT Scanner – used by every hospital department, 24 hours/day
- A Neurosurgical Microscope – to support microsurgical procedures
- A 3Tesla MRI Scanner – imaging with exceptional anatomic detail
- Advanced Ultrasound Imaging System – dramatically upgrading existing capabilities
Equipment Acquisition for the Medical Departments:
- For the Operating Rooms – monitors and other equipment
- For the Epilepsy Center – equipment to improve diagnostic and treatment services
- For Orthopedic Back Surgery – a surgical navigation and imaging system
- For the IVF Unit – equipment to enhance fertility treatment outcomes
- For the Dermatology Department – a new laser therapy instrument
A Founding Role in Renewal
From an Ottoman convent to a modern medical city, the East Campus has served the people of northern Israel for more than a century. Helping to renew it means every patient, in its newest tower or its oldest ward, receives the same standard of care.
