New York Times Article Cites Study Authored by Rambam’s Professor Itai Shavit
Professor Itai Shavit, Director of the Cheryl Spencer Pediatric Emergency Department in Rambam Health Care Campus’s Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital, is the senior author on a study cited in a New York Times article about the need for healthcare workers to ensure that no skin is exposed while managing patients’ airways or treating any patient who coughs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“’Doctors and nurses could potentially become a new source of infection,” Prof. Shavit postulated. “They would be at risk, but so would their colleagues and the patients they see when they leave the room.’
While Prof. Shavit is quick to point out that his study is small and uses only simulation, ‘it’s probably not right to think that patients are the only source of infection. We have to think about ourselves and our colleagues’.”
