Top Military Officials Visit Rambam as IDF Prepares to Open COVID-19 Departments in Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital, Marking IDF’s First-ever Cooperation with an Israeli Hospital
The IDF’s Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief Medical Officer visit Rambam Health Care Campus as the army’s Medical Corps establish two COVID-19 departments at Rambam. This operation marks the first time that the military is cooperating with an Israeli hospital as well as its first time treating civilians.
In cooperation with Rambam Health Care Campus, the IDF Medical Corps is currently in the process of establishing two COVID-19 departments in the Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital, in addition to the four COVID-19 departments (including one intensive care unit) opened by Rambam that are already in operation. The decision to partner with Rambam was made as a result of the drastic increase in COVID-19 cases in the north of the country. It is the first time in history that the IDF is cooperating with a hospital in Israel, and the first it has been tasked with providing medical care for civilians.
General Eyal Zamir, the IDF’s Deputy Chief of Staff, and Brigadier General Professor Elon Glassberg, the IDF’s Chief Medical Officer, visited Rambam earlier today for a briefing and to observe the preparations and activities in the underground hospital.
The new departments are scheduled to open in the coming days, and will be staffed by more than 100 military doctors, nurses, medics, and paramedics.
Notes Dr. Michael Halberthal, Rambam’s General Director, “Many members of our administration have extensive military experience, and we are proud of this unique opportunity to work with the some of the brightest minds in the IDF in the battle against COVID-19. The additional departments and added manpower enable Rambam to provide a better long-term solution for patient care during the pandemic, easing the burden felt by our own dedicated, hardworking medical teams.”
