New Hematology Unit Opened at Rambam
September 5, 2022 – To meet a growing need for inpatient care, a new hematology unit was recently opened at Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel.
A new, 14-bed, state-of-the-art, inpatient hematology unit – Inpatient Unit – Hematology B – under the directorship of Dr. Inna Tzoran, Senior Hematologist, Department of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation was recently opened at Rambam Health Care Campus (Rambam).
Rambam is a 1,000-bed academic hospital serving over 2 million residents of Northern Israel. Providing comprehensive medical services in all medical specialties, Rambam is the tertiary referral center for 12 district hospitals. In fact, it is the only hospital in the north which has dedicated beds for its hematology patients.
A team of highly-trained specialist physicians and nurses provide each patient in the newly opened, Inpatient Unit – Hematology B, with the highest level of medical care; oncology patients, undergoing chemotherapy, out-patients who require close medical supervision as well as a wide range of other related medical interventions.
In the last 18-months, CAR T-Cell therapy – a revolutionary type of blood cancer treatment that programs a patient’s own altered white blood cells to kill cancer cells, was integrated at Rambam. Rambam is the only hospital in Northern Israel, authorized by Israel’s Ministry of Health to offer CAR T-Cell therapy which requires skilled staff and advanced laboratory services for cell collection.
Car T-Cell therapy is now part of the unique basket of health-care services Rambam provides and also bone marrow transplants, treatment of severe blood-clotting disorders and other life-threatening conditions.
Fourteen new beds add to the existing fifteen beds used for bone marrow transplant patients as well as eight active hematology-beds.
Dr. Michal Mekel, Deputy Director of Rambam, participated in the opening ceremony which took place at the Bayview Building in the heart of the Rambam Health Care Campus. The ceremony was also attended by Professor Tsila Zuckerman, Director of the Department of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Institute, Dr. Ron Hoffman, Deputy Director of the Hematology Department and Director of the Hematology Clinical Service, Dr. Nathaniel Horowitz, Director, Hematology Outpatient and Liya Katzir, Head Nurse, Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Hematology, and many other partners.
Dr. Ina Zoran summarizes: “In recent years, the demand for hospitalization within department has exceeded the supply. As the largest health-care institute in Northern Israel, we are faced with more and more complex referrals. Monitoring the side-effects of chemotherapy treatment requires inpatient care. This requirement has created a growing demand for advanced, professional care. The additional beds have made it possible to improve the quality of care given to patients in the hematology unit in a more homogeneous manner and at the same time, reducing the need for emergency room intervention. The multidisciplinary care Rambam offers, had a direct and positive effect on the health and recovery of the public – our patients.”
